Our Review of the
Safety 1st Crosstown DLX
Our recommendation: From birth until the seat is outgrown (average 6-7 years old)
A 3-in-1 car seat that can be used rear-facing, forward-facing, and in high-back booster mode
From birth (for average/large newborns) or after the infant seat is outgrown
Seat is good for you if
You want to use a convertible seat from birth.
This seat’s lowest harness height is 5.75″, so it is a good fit for average or larger newborns from birth if you want to skip the infant seat. This seat has a good recline setting for infants, so it works well in that regard, too, but it does take up a lot of space front to back at the required recline. To fit a newborn in this seat, you have to move the harness to another position. The no-rethread portion of the seat does not have a low enough position. This isn't very difficult to do. The harness padding is very bulky and will need to be removed for a newborn in order to get the chest clip where it needs to go. If you are expecting a tiny baby, such as a premature or low birth weight baby, we would recommend a different seat like one of these.
You need a rear-facing seat that is compact from front to back.
Once the child can sit unassisted, the Safety 1st Crosstown DLX convertible car seat is very compact front-to-back.
Use caution if
You want only to buy one seat ever.
This seat has a 52″ standing height limit for the booster mode. We’ve found that only around 50% of kids can pass the 5-Step Test at 57″, so far fewer would pass at 52″, likely 0% of kids. While this seat will still last for a few years, purchasing another booster will be necessary.
You need to fit car seats 3 across in your vehicle.
The Safety 1st Crosstown DLX is 18″ wide, so it wouldn’t be our first choice when trying to fit 3 car seats in one row of a vehicle. It may work if the other 2 seats in the 3 across configuration are more narrow than this one or if it’s a vehicle with a wide back seat.
Quirks to be aware of
Forward-Facing Minimums
All Safety 1st seats now say that your child must reach one of the rear-facing limits before turning the child forward-facing. For this seat, that means the child must be 40 pounds OR 40" OR you can't position the harness in a way that gives them at least 1" of space between their head and the top of the car seat.
Rear-facing installation
Whenever possible, the Safety 1st Crosstown DLX should be touching the vehicle seat in front of it. But you need to check your vehicle owner's manual first because some vehicle manufacturers do not allow that.
Child Fit Information
Our 5-month-old model is 16 pounds and 24 inches tall. She's using the lowest harness height in this picture, which is the one you have to rethread the harness to use. Her torso is still too short to use the next harness slot that is located in the no-rethread harness portion of the seat.

Airplane Use
The Safety 1st Crosstown Slim is an FAA-approved car seat, so you can find a label with red lettering on one of the stickers that says so. It does weigh around 19 pounds, so there are definitely lighter options than this one. If traveling internationally, you will need a locking clip in order to do a seat belt installation. Contact the car seat manufacturer for a free locking clip. We have a video here of how to use a locking clip.

SITS Bottom Line
The Safety 1st Crosstown DLX's low harness height of 5.75 inches makes it suitable for most newborns, though adjustments are needed to achieve a proper fit. While compact front-to-back, once a child can sit unassisted, it requires significant space for the newborn recline position. At 18 inches wide, it will not be the best option for three-across configurations. Weighing 19 pounds, this three-in-one convertible car seat is FAA-approved but heavier than some alternatives, making it a less convenient option for frequent travelers.
