🌈 Before You Dive in, Remember, Here at Safe in the Seat:

We follow best practice guidelines – our tool is designed with this in mind.

We know that riding rear-facing is safest for our youngest passengers. A child should never forward-face before age two, and we encourage a goal of age four.

Boosters are for big kids and require maturity to ride safely. For most kids, this means they should not be riding in a booster until they are five or older.

🔎 Seek Specialized Help If:

  • Your child has a medical/physical disability.
  • Your vehicle was manufactured before 2002.

Your child's size matters!

Are you shopping for a convertible car seat for your newborn?

SITS TIP! While all car seats state a weight limit range, it doesn't always mean the car seat will fit your small baby safely. Not to worry—we know which ones will! This is why we typically recommend starting with an infant seat.

How would you describe your child's build compared to same-age peers?

Torso height matters because kids sit in car seats.

Does your child have a long torso?

The answer is likely yes if you buy a larger size shirt than pants.

Just chiming in here for a quick SITS safety message!

While you’re shopping this stage to keep your forward-facing kiddo in a harness, these seats transition to booster mode as well. Your child’s body will always be in the proper position in a harness seat because they don’t have a choice! In booster mode, it’s your child’s responsibility to keep their body in the proper position! It’s a big deal, and why we recommend maxing out the harness seat before graduating your child from the harness to booster mode.

When your child meets ALL of these criteria, you can make the transition to high back booster:

✔️Reached the height and/or weight limits of their current seat AND

✔️Mature enough to sit properly the entire ride, AND

✔️At least 5 years old, AND

✔️Meets the height, weight, and/or age requirements of the booster, AND

✔️Has proper seat belt fit (fit varies by car), AND

✔️Has practiced riding properly on short rides for a period of time
